IBM Model D Electric -- Typebar Linkage / Letter Cam Cleaning

Asking you for advice because I'm out of thoughts:

I've a 1973 IBM Model D, typebar electric 15" carriage carbon film, running up to last weekend's broken belt--thanks to TypewriterKing's drive belt lead, it will spark to life shortly.

A few typeslugs (. , e i -) near the platen with less force than the rest, barely or not touching the platen, leaving a faint or no impression. Moved these individual typebars by hand, I felt a slight drag just before reaching the platen. Set the personal touch control inside the case (not the 1-10 lever on the outside bottom) to maximum, the striking force changed to print a character. From the bottom, pivoted the wide, brassy, angle bar (beside and parallel to the power roll, looks similar to a universal bar) away lessened the load on these typebars and they struck well. The remaining characters strike well and clearly--the sound of slug impact is telling.

I hope to ease these typebars last centimeter of travel. How will I degrease and lube these less-forceful typebar linkages and pivots from the letter cams to the typebars? To me, it's not apparent how to access these parts with letter cams across the entire bottom & keylevers across the top.

On top, I degreased and cleaned the segment, accessible typebar surfaces and guide combs. From the bottom, I removed fhe carbon film take-up assm, then the power roll, and cleaned the roller and any rubber in the cam grooves. Without the rubber power roll, the letter cams blocked access to the machine. The 44 letter cams were siamesed tightly across its width, so their bearings were inaccessible, as well as reaching mechanisms above them. Lubed the power roll bearing sleeve, greased the inside length of the brassy angle bar where lever ends strike, re-assembled, yet no change in impressions.

Any ideas, alternatives or suggestions are truly welcome. I like using this well made machine--it's stylish industrial look--and I'm passing the Model D on soon for its desk space and wish it a continued used life--just wish mitigating these last issues and gain some experience for myself.

Thanks for any help!

Re: IBM Model D Electric -- Typebar Linkage / Letter Cam Cleaning

Looks like you got a little further along than I thought.  Just be sure you get out all the excess oil before you re-install the power roller.  I included further reading in your private message folder to help you adjust individual letters, since most upright electric typewriters have individual adjustable type--some, like the IBM Model D, have individual adjustments for both capital and lower case.
