Slugs not hitting ribbon/platen

Hi there! I recently acquired a smith corona skyriter and it's mechanism were all in working conidition.

But some portions were basically rusting and the machine smelled so bad (as though someone puked on it)... so I went ahead and took apart the entire typewriter to clean it.

After cleaning and reassembling it, everything seems fine except that the slugs are about an inch away from the ribbon when fully depressed and I can't seem to figure out why?

Hopefully someone would be able to give me some advice?

!st thing; Press the margin release key and see if this clears it.  Make sure the right margin stop is well to the right.  Maybe the machine thinks you've reached the end of that line.

Sincerely,
beak.

Re: Slugs not hitting ribbon/platen

I agree, it definitely sounds like the line lock is on.

Although a sufficiently rusted or gummed up mechanism might not unlock under spring tension alone, or the spring might be missing. I'd check under the machine to see where the line lock mechanism is, and figure out how to move it to the unlocked position.
