Imperial The Good Companion - Carriage Release Lever

Hi,

This is my first post and the first typewriter I have looked at, I am pleased to have found this forum.

I've got an Imperial The Good Companion typewriter and it is in good condition and works OK but for one issue. I'm hoping someone may be able to give me some advice. I have checked Google but can't find a solution but I may not be looking in the right places.

I think I have an issue with the carriage release lever, it is on the right hand side of the carriage and doesn't have any tension on it meaning that if the lever moves for any reason the carriage is released and returns moves left..The lever just moves freely.

There is a spring at the base of the lever but it is not hooked onto anything. I have examined the machine bur cannot see anything obvious where the spring should sit.. I am not sure whether another arm of the spring has snapped off or whether it was a later fix applied.

I've tried to find some pictures to use as a reference but so far have had no luck.

I have attached a couple of pics.. Hopefully this all makes some sense :-)

If anyone could advise or direct me somewhere I may find the answer I would be grateful.

Regards

Neil

Re: Imperial The Good Companion - Carriage Release Lever

Seems like your issue is definitely the carriage release lever. If you could attach a photo of the bottom of the carriage on that side, that would be very helpful.

Re: Imperial The Good Companion - Carriage Release Lever

Hi..

Thank you.

I have uploaded some photographs of the underside of the carriage. Hope they are clear enough.

Thanks

Neil

Re: Imperial The Good Companion - Carriage Release Lever

Hard to tell, but I am suspecting that wire piece to be a small spring coiled between the leaver and the frame.  Is there a spring on the left-hand carriage release?

Also, it looks like there is a slot in the side of the frame right by that wire piece.  Is that so?

Re: Imperial The Good Companion - Carriage Release Lever

If it is indeed a spring, and that is indeed a slot, then I believe it anchors to that slot.  Must be a strong spring.  Perhaps I can dig up a photo from someone I know who deals a lot with these machines.

Check these out.  I think I see the spring you’ve indicated.  It comes parallel to the leaver, makes a right angle, then disappears.

Re: Imperial The Good Companion - Carriage Release Lever

@Lucas Dul Thank you so much for those pictures and for taking the time to help me out. I appreciate it :-)

I can anchor fit mine as shown above but the spring isn't anchored to the lever.. I think it is possible something may have broken from the spring or maybe it has come away from the lever.

I shall have a go at trying to remove the lever and get a good look at the spring and see if there is anything obvious..

Once I have had a look I will post some pics.

Re: Imperial The Good Companion - Carriage Release Lever

Great! Replacement parts!
Though if there’s enough left of the spring, more than a full coil or two, try bending up a bit to form a new anchor first.
