Why do you need the carriage off?

Because one of the gears the guides the carriage is clogged with grase. I now this, because on my Oliver, the carriage would barley move until I cleaned the gear, and now it wokrs great. Also, Its wicked dusty, and I just want to clean everything good.

The Royal 10 isn't designed to have an easily removed carriage, so unless you want to have a big mess on your hands I would suggest not messing with taking it off and instead clean the rails best you can. If that gear is the problem, removing the panels under the carriage would be an easier solution to gain access to it.

If II felt like doing it, how would I? Yesterday I got it cleaned pretty good by spraying some degreaser into the carriage rails and gears, and its working better.

Ok you wanna know so here you go.
first disconnect the drawband & place it on the drawband holder on deck plate
after that remove the 2 top plates that hold the ribbon
after that engage shift lock and remove
all of the little l shaped pieces that have 2 screws
that keep the carrige on
once that is done remove the top little roller
that runs along the round shaft in the back
then it should lift right off

I had to take off the carriage, and followed your steps. They worked, EXCEPT part of the backspace mechanism was blocking it so I had to pry the carriage off. Boy, there was a load of grease in those bearings!

Wait, you actually did it? Congrats!

But, I don't want to be, you know, "that guy," though would it be possible if you could provide some picture of the screws and the backspace mechanism that caused you some trouble?

Re: How to take off the carriage of a Royal Model 10?

Yup.

I figured out an easier way than trying to pry that carriage off. Theres a screw (Going to be in my photos) and unscrew it halfway, and then the carriage will lift right off.

By the way, when you put the carriage back on, you will have to tighten those clips that hold the carriage on and adjust them properly.

Its the same way to take the carriage off a Royal 1 or 5, maybe Ill try that later.
