Olympia Senior - carriage won't shift

I have a very basic question: I recently bought an AEG Olympia Dactymetal Senior, French AZERTY keyboard, which I have discovered was made in the 70's in then Yugoslavia. It is in very good condition, but has one problem - the carriage won't shift. The shift keys both work, the caps lock works but the carriage will not rise up. The carriage locks centrally when the small lever on the left is activated. It does not stick or jam and frees the carriage immediately when pushed to open position. I removed the back cover and looked for any signs of loose parts or wires, or breakage, but could see nothing. Could anyone make a suggestion as to what precisely is wrong,?
Thank you.
