Help with serial #

I can't tell what this says. To me it looks like 20?859.

Is that third character a 1? 7? Some other symbol?
This is from my underwood portable 3, just trying to date it.

Thanks!

Re: Help with serial #

Hmmmm ya, ok

You know what… I'm not even sure I got my serial number from the right location. I got mine from the top side on the far right below the keys… But looking on typewriter database it looks like the serial number is on the underside of the machine. I don't have a skinny enough screwdriver to actually take it off of the bottom case cover so I need to go buy one but I will report back.

Re: Help with serial #

I am actually not sure which number counts, and would like to know the answer myself. Until I saw your post, I didn't realize there were two numbers. On mine, the number on the bottom of the machine is really close in sequence to the number visible under the keys; so both date it to the same year.

Re: Help with serial #

It looks exactly like a German '1' to me. Certainly not a '7'.

The pronoun has always been capitalized in the English language for more than 700 years.
