Re: Possible Acquistions Thread

So what are your thoughts about this particular model?

Re: Possible Acquistions Thread

I can't speak to that model specifically, but any noiseless is, as mentioned, a pretty complicated mechanism and hard to work on -- though you may be skilled and patient enough to figure them out! I would definitely want to test the machine thoroughly before buying it.

Any noiseless has a different typing feel from a regular typewriter, and requires a different typing technique -- more of a harder, more deliberately firm touch, in order to overcome the lower momentum of the typebar mechanism. You may try it and decide you don't like it.

Re: Possible Acquistions Thread

It looks nice, the keys are working, but the problem is in the ribbon avance mechanism, it doesn't seem to work and the ribbon covers are missing.

Re: Possible Acquistions Thread

And I guess is not a model 4 but a model 1? Nice to look at, pretty old but needing some good love :-)

Re: Possible Acquistions Thread

Not really thinking about getting this. I was more interested in others' thoughts about the paint job -- the side panels definitely don't look like a factory job, for example, but it appears to have been done skillfully: https://newlondon.craigslist.org/atq/d/vintage-smith-corona/6465934803.html

Re: Possible Acquistions Thread

I agree.  Also the same applies to the front cover.  The logo isn't original either but very well done and would fool most people.  Of course, the spool covers are missing but these often get discarded because wear makes the spools catch on the inside.

Re: Possible Acquistions Thread

I just found what I think is a great find and wanted to share it with you in case any of you are interested in buying it.  It is a Bijou (1910-12) folding typewriter (British export of Erika).  It seems to have the original case and the original manual.  It also has the Reliance House sticker on the front (seller or importer?) They say it is a Bijou 3 but comparing it to the typewriter database, I think it is the Bijou version of the Erika 1 (The one with the 26 exposed screwheads on the side).  The price is 285,29$ and they take Paypal.  The store looks legitimate but who knows?

A closer look shows it might have been repainted.
