Triumph Standard 12 - two questions

Hello everybody,
I recently acquired a Triumph Standard 12 typewriter, from just before the war.
Considering its age, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the platen is completely hard, and the machine makes some very loud noises when typing. I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge about how to remove the platen on old Triumph Standard machines (I think 10 and 14 might be pretty much identical so if anyone knows about those, that might be helpful also).
Another 'problem' is that the end margin won't stop the carriage from advancing. When you reach the point where the carriage is supposed to be stopped by the margin, the carriage just pushes the margin aside (or down) and it allows you to continue typing. The bell works, so I'm fairly certain the machine isn't out of whack.

Thanks in advance for your advice.
