They sound brilliant.  One day...

I'm travelling by car so I've lots of room for everything.  I'm not going to take my big old desktop machine, as it has a bad habit of breaking tables.  But Halda Portable is good enough for this journey.

I got some stronger magnets and the back door stays closed now.  Still having a bit of trouble with the carriage not advancing for a, s, q, and w.  I suspect this is user error because I sometimes have that trouble with the other machine.

It's a lot quieter than I remember.

Research for the book started many years ago.  I've tried writing the book many times but it wasn't until I used a typewriter that things really took off.

I sat down at the typewriter late last winter with an aim to practice typing.  The book just tumbled out.  Since then it's been an adventure learning about publishing.

Thank you.

I got my Halda off the shelf for a few test types.  I forgot that I forgot to fix the back door.  I have it closed with magnets right now, but it won't stay closed and with it open, the bell won't work.  I'll have to fix that before I bring it.

I'm taking a course at the end of the month that involves spending a night in a guest house.  I would really like to take the time away from the internet to work on my next book.  It has wi-fi, so if I take my aged laptop, I would be tempted to check my email.

I've never typed outside the home before.

Do people find the sound annoying?  Does it travel through a house?  I wouldn't type after hours, but I'm nervous of being a nuisance.

What do you do in this kind of situation?

This is what happened.

I found an old, almost working typewriter at a garage sale and brought her home.  I scoured the internet on the best way to restore her and landed here where there are amazing, genius, helpful people who inspired me to get her typing again.

I discovered that the typewriter doesn't mind my dyslexia.  It doesn't judge me for my foibles.

I started typing.

I kept on typing.

I finished the first chapter and showed it to some people.  They said, "this isn't a chapter, it's a book."

More thing happened and I teamed up with a gifted artist to illustrate the book.

And this is where we are today - a book about to be born.

A huge thank you to everyone here for inspiring me to type.

Sorry, I fell into my typewriter and haven't had the computer on in the last few days.  Simply amazing what having the right tool for the job can do to increase productivity.

Skywatcher, I sent you a PM.  If I can't make that work, then having one made would probably be the way to go.

In the meantime, another question for you.  How many times back and forth does a ribbon generally last before it runs out of ink?  I read I can refresh a ribbon so I'm off to look up how to do that.  But I want to know how many ribbons I should stash away so that I have one on hand if I ever need it.

I attempted to measure.  I'm not a deft hand with a caliper so please forgive me.  Outside measurements are easy, it's holes that I find difficult.

I posted the pictures here .

The diameter of the spool is about 52mm or 2 and 1/16"
The hole is roughly 4mm
The peg that the ribbon fits onto is 3.5mm or 1/8"
and the height about 17mm

To make the machine work properly, you need a second Halda spool !

I have this horrible feeling that's going to cost more than the typewriter.

One of my spools look like that.  It's the one that 'eats' the ribbon.  The other side is just a metal spool.  I can make the ribbon go one way, but I can't figure out how to go the other way.

Next question.  It looks like the ribbon should be able to reverse, but I can't figure out how.
Does it need a special spool?  Or is there a magic button?
