Hey guys.

I'd like to know if there is any trick to reinstall the platen on a Halda P. I'm having a hard time with this, because I need to keep a ratschet connected on the line lever on the left side, and at the same time there's a metal washer on the right side. The 1st difficulty is to hold both and install the platen with just 2 hands haha. And the other problem is that even if I use extra help for this, I can't keep everything together, because it's really really tight: I can't insert the platen with everything on, is seems there's not enough space.

There must be some trick to do this. Could someone help me?

I removed the platen from a Remington Quiet-Riter to clean, as I already done it before, but this time two pieces from the inside part of the left knob came out and I don't know how to reattached them. Can someone help me please?

Duane, from Phoenix Typewriter, made a video of a Olivetti 21, that has the same mechanism as the studio 44, and I figured out that the spring rolls around the center piece and goes behind, to the direction of the platen, through the opening on the right. The problem is: where should it go there then? I still can't find out.

I bought this lovely SM4 that looks really good. I removed the body and the platen, cleaned it and got everything back where it belongs.

The problem is, however, that the carriage produces a slight squeaking sound on its left end. I was already familiar with the smashed-washers problems, so I already had replaced them. I observed, and the carriage doesn't hit anything. Maybe the squeaking comes from the escapement?

After more observation, I realized that, right at the moment where the squeaking noise is produced, the carriage seems to push the vibrator mechanism a bit foward. But I'm pretty sure that the carriage is not pressing directly that part, it's forcing it from below - it seems.

This machine has 2 other minor problems that is worth mentioning, since they may be related: 1) the carriage lock, when pressed stands a little below the correct height to engage the little holes in the carriage rail. I have to slightly pull the carriage up to engage; 2) sometimes (not all times), the top of the cap letters is bitten off.

After some research, I found 2 blog posts that seem to face problems related to mine:

The problems is that I still have no Idea what to do. Can someone help me?

In case you are on the Maintenace facebook group, I posted some videos there showing my problem: https://www.facebook.com/groups/typewritermaintenance/permalink/2342949279275841/

Ok, I'd like to bring this post back to life. I couldn't figure out the problem and I decided to come back to it later. As usual, it took me months before I could find time and interest to work on this problem again.

I can't figure out where the problem is. I made a new video: https://youtu.be/TRkytU890e4 And took some pictures:

Maybe someone could check on his own Studio 44 to see the difference? I'd appreciate any help!

Yea, I had to glue the right knob on the shaft. Now it's perfect.

Thank your for the tip!

I removed the platen of an Olympia Traveller to clean it, but now that I screwed it back, the knobs are not gripping properly, specially the right one. It turns without turning the platen, while the left knob does rotate the platen, although it turns very slightly freely before actually gripping the platen.

Any tips on how to solve this?

Hello everyone.

I found a guy near me here in Brazil that's selling a good looking Erika 10 por about $12. That's really rare. He showed me some photos and a video, and it looks pretty good. The only problem is that the spacebar is missing. So I decided to see if there is any DIY method for replacing spacebars berfore I buy it. Any ideas? I thought maybe I could find and old computer keyboard, remove the space bar, adjust it to the typewriter and glue it. Or maybe try some repair shops, or find a really old cheap typewriter and just get the spacebar off to see if it fits. Maybe there are better ideas?

I'd appreciate any help!

Ah, I see. I was afraid of trying to slide the rod away after removing the screws, since it does feel a little stuck. I'll try your suggestion later on today.

Yes, I'm really happy that I got this machine. It's from 1941, as I checked. It has that old brown/beige case and its shift keys are round, not squared. It doesn't have the model name tag anymore, so I was not sure if it was a Quiet Deluxe or an Aristocrat. But the s/n starts with A, so it's definitely a Quiet Deluxe. In spite of the natural wear on its rubber parts, the machine looks really good. It's a rare finding. Here in Brazil, people charge a lot for Royals that look terrible. I bought this one from a sweet senior man that made me promise I was gonna take good care of the machine haha.

Thank you for the tip. I'll come back later to share the results.
