I fixed the SM2 with a tangled drawband by replacing it with some fishing line. I used a long spring hook.  I saw a youtube video about fixing an older typewriter, and the same technique worked

The other SM2 with the bad paint issues I will get the paint removed, I tried myself but the home diy type of paint stripper is not strong enough, more of a renovation than a restoration for that one.

I have found it difficult to replace a missing key, on a 1960’s machine. They look simple, yet complex. For making new steampunk style jewellery then the resin looks ok, but next to the originals then I can see it is more difficult to match.

If you could find any jewellery findings like cufflink bezels that match the size of the missing key then maybe they would work,  but whether they will be as durable as the originals I don’t know, but some have the overlapping ridge.
Eg
http://www.cooksongold.com/Findings/Rhodium-Plated-Oval-Heavy-Weight---Cuff-Link-18x13mm-Pack-of-4-prcode-N2U-110R?p=gs&gclid=EAIaIQobChMImMqC9f2H2QIVTLXtCh0TxQxkEAQYASABEgJS6_D_BwE

Then paste the replica letter on, and pour in the resin level, the jewelery making websites shops look like they have all the supplies and some have tutorials, and on pinterest. I guess if resin is used for special effects and replicas then it might be worth experimenting, I thought about it but it looks like a new medium to get used to, the Art Resin says it is non toxic so can be used indoors.

I agree, I bought a couple for myself and my son saw them and wanted one, but the price in the meantime doubled :o! Naively I didn’t think that there was much demand.  I think ebay inflates the price, when you sell something on ebay I recall it suggests a price,’something similar sold for’ but perhaps it does not differentiate between the ones in good condition, the more popular colours, or the collector’s pieces? so everyone asks more.

I also bought one machine and collected it, the collection only ones seem to go for much less too, no one else placed a bid. I haven’t seen many I like locally though, so I went on a typewriter daytrip.

I wonder when the car boot sale season starts the supply will outstrip demand again. I noticed that with my sewing machines, in spring/summer there was definitely more choice, and spare parts cost less typewriter economics might be similar.

Hello I am new here. I have seen some resin casting typewriter key projects to use in crafts instead of original keys, someone could make as many as they wanted then. I don’t know if they could be used on typewriters though, but better than cutting keys, so it might help your friend, I will try and post a link there are non toxic art resins now. The clear resin looks like glass

The other types well now, but the casing is a disaster. I should have sent it back as it did not look like the pictures,  but with the weight I would lose a lot on postage, and thought it could be repainted or recycled. It looks like it was repainted in the dark, and the paint has not set or bonded with the original colour. The logo is bubbled and damaged, so it is sadly very messy.....my son could have it but not with the sticky paint, who knows what that is I might have to pretend I don’t have this machine unless all the paint can be removed.

The other was to replace it, and I think it can be fixed if you know how with the right tools...so I would like to ask for help with that please    I think it was dropped in the post. The carriage does not advance.  I can see the nylon drawband or cord tangled around the mainspring pulley. It is still attached to the carriage and the mainspring. The ribbon cover and some other bits had fallen off too, and there was a small spring in the case loose, I think it came off the correction table piece, so any advice to untangle or replace the draw cord would be a great help please.

Otherwise I could swap the working machine with the nice casing, but for continuity I like keeping original parts together and the repainted one has slightly different fixtures and looks like it was made at another time

They look like the Olympia SM2 (no tab key) the nice looking one has a serial number 1358680, and the the repainted one is 408430. They both have dark green keys and platen knobs. The nice one is a light cream/very pale green, the repainted one was olive.

Hello and thank you Uwe that would be great if the olympias can be saved, I was sad to see them arrive damaged.

It is rewarding to get the machines typing again so any help would be much appreciated

Hello, I am new here and live in the UK

I have rediscovered typewriters - and I have ‘a few’, well three....that are intact.....two that aren’t, and my son wanted an Olympia Traveller, so then there were six typewriters in the house

I like the different typefaces, and have different ribbons in each.

So I thought I would say hello after reading a lot of helpful information on here

Ps the 3 intact machines are: a cursive Adler Tippa, an Empire Aristocrat and a Smith Corona Sterling. The two in pieces look like Olympia SM2’s so maybe two will make one working machine? bit of a project ;)
