My latest, and LAST one I will let myself spend real money on, arrived today. A 1960 Olympia SM4. It needs a good scrubbing, has a few sluggish keys, one dead key, a bent left carriage knob, the carriage "bump", and the paper bail won't go all the way down. Overall nothing too daunting!

And, since I appear to have figured out the photo posting thing, the three machines I mentioned a couple of days ago!

ANOTHER one came in the mail yesterday, a 1937 (ish) Corona Standard. Not quite as advertised, but for the price I paid I'm mostly happy. The keys work, but the ribbon doesn't advance, and neither does the carriage. The carriage moves freely by hand, but not with a keystroke. It needs a thorough cleaning, hopefully that will get things going correctly.

I would hang on to the Wizard. It's just a Brother JP1 with a different name, but the front panel on them, and others like the Valiant, look great if they're still in good condition.

Yes Sir. When I "re-home" an item it is really more like an adoption for me, not just selling on eBay. The daughter of a very good friend of mine has been using a modern plastic typewriter so I plan to offer it for her use when I have it up and running. If she does not want it, I will keep it. I like to encourage the use of analog tools in today's youth whenever possible!

The reason that the SM9 does not have a 'Red' position on the ribbon selector is that the cursive typeface is much taller than standard and will not entirely fit on the black half of a normal Black/Red ribbon.  Therefore the machine is set up to take an All-Black (or single colour) ribbon only.

THANKS! I thought it might be something like that, now I know. That would be a clue when looking at auction photos when the seller doesn't know how to properly describe their machine

My three most recent purchases: A 1968 Wizard Truetype and a 1957 Remington Quiet-Writer from the estate of an old friend. The Wizard was his wife's and doesn't work at the moment (I hope it's just dirty) and will likely be re-homed, the Remington appears fully functional and was George's so it's a keeper. The other buy is definitely a keeper; a 1966 Olympia SM9 cursive and fully functional.  The oddball thing about the SM9 is it does not have a red ribbon position on the selector.

I need the square flat spring in the ribbon advance mechanism, I don't know the part number, might you have that?

Welcome, Sam! You must get some typewriters passing through your shop on a regular basis.

Those Coronas are nice machines, and handsome as well. I got a chuckle from the Febreze comment. Set it out in the sun for a while to air it out.

Oddly enough the only one I can recall was a couple of months ago, I don't even know what it was. The case was trapezoidal like a Singer sewing machine case but when she said it was a typewriter I was disappointed and passed on it, she didn't even open it. I'm really kicking myself for that now.

I'm trying not to buy any more sewing machines...

I'll give the sunshine treatment a whirl, thanks!

Hello, I am Sam.

I live in Austin Texas, and have been a pawnbroker for 20 years (hence the handle). I have been a fan of mechanical things my whole life, but never really gave typewriters much thought until recently. I had an old portable typewriter in an old footlocker that I told a friend he could have (he wanted a WWII military unit for his WWII collection). I dug it out and researched it, turns out it is a 1939 Corona Zephyr. While researching I sort of fell in love with the concept so I decided that I need ONE, and only one for myself. I tend to get carried away with these collecting phases. Less than one month later I now have three portables, with another on the way. So much for moderation...

My current stable:
1949 Smith Corona Silent (needs one spring to be fully functional)
TBD date Smith Corona Tabulator (needs a lot of attention, and Febreze)
1984 Olympia SFL (runs great, no needs)
TBD date Corona Standard on the way
