Perhaps a repair shop where they repair shoes or bags or other leather products.

Thanks for all the help thewriterman! Really appreciate it. I started putting on WD-40 every now and then.

Just out of curiosity: where are the screws for which seem to go into the platen (pictures 2 and 3)?

Thanks for your reply!

Sorry to be a nuisance, but I have one (hopefully) final question: where exactly are the threads?

I tried to unscrew the knobs. Unfortunately, both sides won't loosen up.

Any advice? Perhaps use WD-40?

So I do not have to unscrew the bolts as seen in the picture? (the bolts that go into the platen roll)

Are both sides right-hand thread?

Do I hold the platen with one hand and try to unscrew platen knob with other hand?

Dear all,

I am in the process of restoring a very dusty and filthy Continental Standard Typewriter. All parts are clean, except for the carriage. Furthermore: the platen is as hard as a rock.

Good news is: I may have found a typewriter platen repair-place in the Netherlands. Still waiting on reply.

In the meantime, I want to get the platen out of the carriage, but I don't know how this is possible.

How do I remove the platen?

Attached some photos.

Thanks in advance!

Kind Regards,
Gert-Jan

Here is a link to a firm in Holland that should be able to help you with re-rubbering https://www.akblongs.nl/contents/en-uk/about.html

Unfortunately they do not replate platens anymore. They used to, though. But not anymore.

Anyway, will give the heat shrink tubes a go; if I fail on that, I can always send it off for professional repair and hope J.J. Short won't laugh at me for trying heat shrink tubes haha.

Thanks for the reply!

So a couple of backing sheets just won't cut it?

That's quite unfortunate, as there are no typewriter re-plating services in the Netherlands. And I don't want to use heat-shrinking rubber, although I have read quite some success-stories about that. But before asking questions about that, I will read some more on this forums!
