Maintenance & Repairs » Adjusting a font » 07-3-2016 14:02:38

I finally got it by adjusting the side nuts slowly and in order from front to back.  Each nut made a subtle change.  They must have been changing the slant of the carriage.

Maintenance & Repairs » 1939 continental portable typewriter » 23-12-2015 15:34:39

I was given this continental typewriter a little while ago, it works fine after cleaning it up.  The only thing is that the draw string could use a little tightening.   I have tightened the draw strings on several other machines easily, but this continental seems different.  As other machines have teeth along side of the draw string wheel that tightens the inner spring, this one'e teeth don't move.    Does anyone know how this continental is adjusted?

Portable Typewriters » An Olivitte Underwood » 12-12-2015 15:37:25

I have come across an Olivitte Underwood in an antique shop.   As I have three others I am familiar with them, sort of. One is an Olivitte studio 45 inclosed in a beautifully designed casing, turquoise.  Another two toned brown and cream.   The casings are plastic but stylish.   The last is smaller in a metal casing, something 22.  Then all type with a light touch that I love.   But the one in the antique store is different, looks late '50s and more heavily made. The controls are 'heavy metal, no plastic, chrome,  and the carriage runs on rails that are different--not visible from the top.   It has a more solid feel.   The question is, was that Olivitte's top design for professional use?   The price is $65; is it worth it, or could it be found cheaper?   It comes in a cream colored carrying case , stylish.

I found it!  If anyone has the same problem I will explain how to attach the spring. It only  took me three hours to figure it out.

Did check the touch control but it does not affect the position of the platen.  But...there is a nut in the back of the carriage that does.   It us on the right side, looking forward from the back.  A screw holds it tight, then when turning it, it adjust the platen.

The line space regulator spring fell out of the Underwood Noiseless 77 when I removed the cover plate on the left side of the carriage.   Looks simple enough, but I cannot find how to put it back in: any tips?

Yes I located it, but I don't have it with me right now.  Have it posted tomorrow.

I'm sorry, the Remington is a Quiet-Riter.

I just found a Remington Lite-Riter at a garage sale for $20.  It looked well kept.   I cleaned  it up anyway, taking the case off and all (the mask I have read).   It types beautifully with an elite font.   Not a flaw, and even the platen is in good shape with some cushion left--hardly been used.  It is well insulated too, so is quiet.  It is light green and a little smaller than my 1951 Remington Letter-Riter, brown; this machine has a hardy feeling, the Lite-Riter has a more light typing action., but solid.   But...I cannot find the serial number, strange.   Anyone know where to look?
