I'm looking to sell or trade a 1948 Olympia 8. I really don't want to ship this delicate monster, so I'm issuing an alert to all typeheads in the mid-Atlantic states (I'm in the Maryland suburbs of DC).

Pan-European keyboard. Healthy rubber feet, intact glass windows. The feed rollers feed and the platen ain't too bad for rubber from the '40s. Superior typing action--this baby ranks up there with the best machines I've ever used.

It's in great condition but has a few quirks:

1. The right spool spindle arm is broken, so the right ribbon spool will fall off if you move the machine. However, I have fashioned makeshift cap that holds the spool in place.
2. Both N and D keys appear to have been crudely welded on. Result: The lower and upper case Ns hit lower than the other letters; ditto for the uppercase D, but not the lowercase D, which strikes slightly higher (see type sample).

I'd be willing to trade this machine for a 1930s Hermes 2000 or most Erika models from the '30s to the '60s. I'd also consider offers of other high-end European mid-century portables and standards.

DM if interested.

Understood.

Let me see if I can find them in the US first. I'll contact you if I can't.

Thanks!

I've got an Olympia 8 desktop machine but no spools. Anybody got any they can spare?

P.S. Note that these are not ordinary spools and definitely not the same as those used by the SG and SM series.

I've got two No. 5s--one in much cleaner condition than the other. One is dirty with some rust, the other is much better cosmetically and nearly functional  but for a sluggish carriage--likely impeded by gunk, grease, and dust. This second one also has visible original painted flourishes; but it is also missing a small chunk of the frame where upper left of the margin ruler screws into the base.

I live in Las Vegas. I also got other machines I'm trying to sell.

I've got two, a Triumph Tippa and an Olympia Traveller. Both work and have their original cases.

I'd like to trade for a green, curvy Hermes 3000 with green keys and either normal pica or elite typeface.

For trade:
--Hermes 3000, curvy first generation, 13 CPI techno elite. With case.
--Hermes 3000, curvy first generation, director pica. With case.
--Hermes Ambassador, green curvy, director pica.

I live in Vegas, and I'm hoping to find a trade somewhere in the southwestern US. I'm willing to meet up halfway and perhaps drive the full distance depending on where you are.

Thanks.

Actually, Phil, that doesn't answer the question. I just checked the TWDB, and every photo I can find of this particular model shows a paper bail with no rollers.

So there has to be some other way that this machine maintains tension.

I have a first generation Hermes 3000 with very stiff key action, even with the touch control on its lightest setting. The lightest setting on that machine is actually stiffer than the lightest setting I have on another first generation Hermes 3000, which types with the cushioned feel that accounts for part of the appeal of that model. But the first machine? I really have to pound on those keys--much harder than on many if not most typewriters I've used.

What gives? What's wrong with that first machine and its stiff key action? Is there any way to fix this?

Thanks in advance.

I have a 1970s Adler Tippa that makes an awful ratcheting noise when the carriage is returned. Closer inspection revealed that the silencer spring is dislodged from its proper place, so it's no longer silencing the escapement mechanism.

Does anybody have any idea how to get to the escapement mechanism in these machines? Do I have to take the carriage off? And if so, how? I've looked for info on this specific to these machines and so far come up with nothing useful.

Thanks in advance!
