I assume "mill" is short for military, with an extra l thrown in.
I just had to add that so I could go from being a novice typer to a key puncher. I am so proud.

I have a Hammond 12 that is lacking its nameplate. It's a cream coloured semi-circular piece that goes on the top, just inside the semicircle of keys. If you have a Hammond that's beyond repair, or by some miracle have just that nameplate sitting around, please contact me!

I actually managed to fix it, without really knowing what I'm doing. I stripped out all the keys and arms until I got into the guts of the thing. Once I took out a piece of the frame I was able to move the aforementioned oval shaped piece up and down. This won't make sense but: basically there was a piece that had to be in the fork of another piece, but was underneath it. I put it into the fork and now almost everything works. Still some tinikering to do but headed in the right direction.

I've just acquired an Empire typewriter;
It's a cool machine, but it has issues. First, it's got a "noiseless" style thrust mechanism, which on many of the keys has come undone:
This is easy enough to understand, though probably hard to fix.
What has me stumped is the fact that none of the keys will go down, thus none of the slugs will push forward into the platen. It appears that their movement is being prevented by a piece on the bottom of the machine. Here's the bottom:
And here's a closer photo, with the tip of the pencil resting on the piece of metal (the thick wire like thingy, shaped like an elongated oval:
This piece is positioned so that when a key is pressed, the arm presses down onto it and it prevents anything from moving. Is this a lock of some kind? I've gone over the whole machine and can't find any way to move it. Is it supposed to stop the bottoms of the arms from pushing down so that some other part pushes forward into the platen? I'm stumped. If there are any Empire experts out there, here's your chance to shine. Thanks!

Aha! Thanks Uwe, that's useful information.
When I switch to upper case with this machine, the letters are too low. The tops of the capitals are even with the tops of the lower case letters, rather than the bottoms being even as it should be. I can see that this is caused by the type arms being lowered too far when I press the shift key. In fact, if I press the shift key only partway down, I can make the capitals line up properly. I assume there's some sort of adjustment which is out of whack and causing this problem, which is why I surmised a missing lever. Any idea where else I could look to solve this?

That may not be the right term for the part I'm looking for, but I don't know what else to call it. If you happen to have an Underwood Leader that you're parting out, open the lid and look on the left side. There's a metal part with a slot in it and the number 1-5. I'm pretty sure there should be a lever of some kind in that slot that controls the height of the type when you switch to upper case. I have an Underwood Leader in near perfect condition except that, for some inexplicable reason, it's missing this lever. Help!

I think I did pretty well pricewise on these, given their rarity. I might have gone a little high on the Blick, but I didn't have one, had been outbid before, and wanted to get it. The other three are pretty hard to get your hands on outside of specialist circles.
