SoucekFan,
Wow, thanks. Yes, there it was.  554713 - if I'm reading the database correctly, it's an Underwood Universal made sometime in the early 1930's.
Phil,
Do you have any links as to cleaning up the escapement on this model?
It arrived today from a Goodwill store.  They appeared to have had it working OK and now I'm worried it got dropped in transit and something has broken. As mentioned, the carriage does not center. I can center it by lifting "a catch" (shown in the video) but that doesn't solve much of anything. Am I missing something?
Cheers

(This is embarrassing, but I can't find the serial number anywhere on this machine. Can some kind soul help me out?)
Here's some photosof the problem -  video to follow.
Seems like it is missing something (a spring maybe) that lifts a catch that keeps the carriage from flying to the right-hand-side margin position.
Cheers!

Sky,
Thanks for taking the time to get the part numbers.
I presume the "pinion" part is the one that looks like a star washer.
Kind of a shame I didn't find them - the typewriter itself is in very good condition.
Cheers!

Wow, many thanks for thinking about the problem Sky!
Unfortunately, I never did find the ball bearings or star washers.
Let me ponder the math bit - that has an interest all on its own.
Cheers!

Sky and Mr. M. Höhne,
Many thanks for putting that in perspective.
I stand corrected.
Cheers!

Sky,
Thanks for all that info.
It certainly is a complicated way of doing things.
This is my 3rd post so I'll link some photos tomorrow, if anyone is interested.
Cheers!

Sky,
Thanks for welcoming me to the forum. Sorry about the vagueness of my question.

Perhaps a little history on this Royal may help.
I had taken the carriage off to fix something (can't remember what), lost interest and put the typewriter in the closet.  That was about 20 years ago, no kidding.

Now, I'm trying to fix the typewriter.  As a first step, the carriage would need to be put back on its track so it doesn't lift off. How is this done?

Cheers!

I'm about to re-attach the string - is there anything else that keeps the carriage held down?
Photos
Cheers.
