Thanks Kat! the seller said it was non-working, a parts machine. According to him, he had his typewriter repair guy take a look at it. He couldn't fix it, added that it could have been dropped. I didn't see any obvious signs of it being dropped. I bought it for more learning than anything and maybe just maybe get it working. It's a little quirky but it types!

Maintenance & Repairs » Key for locked Smith-Corona portable case » 05-4-2017 13:51:18

I've used a very small screw driver to unlock a couple of cases. I had to carefully feel around lock internals to feel what moved ...

Patience paid off. Recently got one for $49 including shipping. It's the Lexus model. Question: how do i adjust upper case alignment? I can adjust lower case with two tiny screws on the bottom but for the life of me can't adjust the uppercase. FYI, the lower case has been adjusted to line up with the upper case letters but it's too low because the carriage drags on the base of the typewriter hence needing to adjust upper case.

Lastly, a vent of sorts: I've bought a few machines from so-called collectors, active online members and was disappointed with one particular seller. Seller said the machine was in working condition and upon receiving it, had all sorts of issues - major major skipping, all feed rollers were shot and paper return is not working properly. If this seller was honest, I would not have paid the high price. My assumption is that these collectors, active online members would be more honest. Lessons are still in the learning for me!

Uwe, I agree that price does not necessarily reflective of the condition. When purchasing online, using common sense and asking lots of questions are helpful. I'm not referring to those "scammers" of high priced items. I'm referring to those reputable sellers and repair shops.

FYI, I'm working on a Smith Galaxie II and waiting for a Smith 5TE (2nd Smith electric) to arrive soon. Gotta love those Smiths!

Mostly I tinker and am still learning.  Yes, it seems to be harder to find a bargain these days but in my opinion, those that buy those higher price ones are doing their part in keeping these beauties around AND like you, keeping those small amount of repair shops from closing their doors. A win-win for everyone.

You have to keep in mind that not all are willing to learn how to clean/repair typewriters. I think those high cost  buyers don't want to deal with it. Time, supplies, learning curve is not worth it for some or they aren't interested at all. They are looking for that one or two typewriter. I'll pay more for a machine if it's been clean and working or if it's a model that's hard to come by. Most collectors/users on these various forums are able and willing to learn hence the low purchase prices and they want more typewriters than one or two. Different stokes for different folks!

typeset, since you're giving the cord away, what are you doing with the typewriter? If you're shelving it, i'll be willing to take it off your hands. would be a good project for me since i'm not familiar with electric repairs.
