When I was in the Army in 1974 working in a military hospital in NJ, one evening thieves broke in the hospital and stole all the Selectrics.  It was some type of inside job as the windows were all left unlocked.  I was the designated Officer of the Day and it happened on my watch!  I was the sole person making rounds in the whole hospital so it was easy pickings.

My Hermes 3000 has the same problem.  I never knew it had that function before now after reading this.  Now my perfect Hermes 3000 is no longer perfect.  Damn!

Thanks Pete.  That was very helpful.  MY machine came with the Senatorial typeface and 11 cpi...I couldn't be happier.

Just acquired this delightful machine from 1962, my first Olympia, and I have a few questions.  The ribbon reversal mechanism:  Does it require rivets in the ribbon to work properly or is it just tension that reverses it?  I loaded some ribbons with rivets and it did not work that well.  There is no mention of rivets in the manual either.  On another matter I have read somewhere that the SM-7 model is just a SM-3 or 4 with a more modern outer shell.  Is that true and would a 1955 SM service manual apply to the SM-7?   BTW Duane Jenson's video on reducing the shift key pressure really helped.

Ted Munk was immensely helpful with the escapement manual pages.  The culprit was a misaligned Pawl lever and a lot of bad settings with the adjustment screws. It took several hours but I got it working fine.  After I address a few more minor issues, I think I will have a decent typer.

I have a Montgomery Ward Signature 513(JP-3) that I am attempting to fix the escapement.  This has 3 eccentric screw settings, 2 in on the front plate and 1 in the rear that is unable to be accessed unless the whole escapement is removed.  Would love to know what sequence and settings that a manual might offer as this is one of the most frustrating tasks that I have encountered.  The carriage either runs free or is totally locked...can't find a happy medium.  All parts appear ok as there is no evidence of missing or broken parts.  I have been playing with this for weeks and am not getting anywhere.  I got this through SGW so don't know its history.  Hint:  When I received the typewriter the drawband was not attached.  So, if anyone could share the escapement chapter of the manual, that would be greatly appreciated.

This is a Brother JP-3 that is a lot bigger than most Brothers and I am guessing somewhat rare. I got this from SGW cheap and I suspected some issues but this flying carriage issue has me baffled.  I am at an impasse as to what the problem is, as I have removed the escapement assembly (with a lot of difficulty), cleaned  all parts very thoroughly...nothing appears, to me, at least to be missing, that includes all screws, nuts and springs.   Space bar ,key press and backspace will secure the carriage but otherwise not.  The star wheel gear is definitely engaged in the carriage rail.  There are 3 adjustment screws with lock nuts...I have played with them at different settings but so far no success.
I am hoping someone who has worked on this type of machine can offer some advice and guidance.  It could be something simple that I am missing.

Yes it pivots back, but beware the plastic is brittle with age and it can break...it happened to me.
