had used one of this special screws for the chassis and so used the wrong screw there. I corrected this.

Well done. It is very satisfying when you discover and fix earlier misrepairs

It that were my machine, I guess I would go in with some fine jeweler's metal files and see if I could improve the shape of the lower-case "e".

Or a Proxxon with a very fine grinding attachment tip.
.

Thanks Pete, that will be plan B if I can not find a replacement.
Cheers,

It was not a nice surprise when this machine arrived and the lower case e appeared to be severely damaged.
How does damage like this happen? It seems almost deliberate.

The answer is of course: replace it, as I understand after browsing this forum. Replace the slug (soldering) or replace the whole type bar. But where to find a replacement? Donor machines are not so common here.
Are there other machines with the same typeface?
It is so frustrating that sellers hardly ever provide a type specimen.

Dropping small parts, especially small springs, is a real nuisance. About half of the time of my watchmaker training was spent looking for small parts on the ground. And finding things that others lost :-)
Working on the middle of your workbench, and not on the edge, good lighting and most of all patience, help a lot.
And a screwdriver with clips.

Hi Chris,

I checked with my Media 3 - there should be no play on the platen knob.
Can it be that the threads on the female side have also worn?
Do you have an original screw with the point that is narrower on the end, so it catches in a slot on the axis? (see picture).
Did you mount the 2 little flat springs on both sides of the axis? (see picture).

Hope this helps :-)
Paul

To determine the thread size of a screw you can use a screw thread gauge. You can find them for under $10.
