That’s a nice royal, though the price is pretty steep!!

Second note, both parts fit flush.  make sure the tab on the bottom one, the index selector, lines up with the numbers 1-3 on the carriage frame/body cap.  The slot in the other part goes straight up (if I recal) and the spring goes into the back of the carriage. Look and you’ll see a connection.

Best of luck!!!!

I regrettably don’t have the photo I once did from a repair last year. I do believe the typewriter man is right.  Index selector first, then pawl.  The spring connects further back into the carriage, and the little stick thing hanging off the carriage return leaver fits into the slot.  The platen holds it together.  On the right side, you need to make sure the TINY WASHER goes in BETWEEN the platen and the carriage frame.  It’s a pain in the ass but you’ll get it.  It won’t work without, trust me.  Always take photos my friend, saves time and heartache.

Keep going. Make sure you’re turning them the right way, you might need to turn a lot more just to see a change.  If that’s not working try adjusting the lowercase.
In a resting position, the bolts that the carriage sit on control the lowercase, and during shift, the bolts it hits are uppercase.

Okay, so the first image is the screw.  The leaver has a pin on the bottom side, and is held in by a screw on the top side.

On the second image, make sure the bracket that holds the leaver is straight.

Final image, proper leaver clearance.  Your leaver is either bent, the bracket is bent, or it’s lose.

The lever may be bent, especially if the machine has taken a fall.  If it’s really lose, you may want to tighten the adjustment screw/pivot screw and tighten things up.

Okay, I’m gonna update this.  The Erika doesn’t have a standard star wheel escapement, instead, it has two pieces that ride along a ratchet track and a compression style spacer.  It seems that the issue is more based on the integrity of the parts, and the more force applied on the carriage, the more it wants to push the locking piece out of the way and skip.  Is it a common issue for Erika’s to skip??  Happens irregularly and it’s not due to speed or technique.  I get up to 120WPM on my Royal 10 without a single issue.

Personaly I’d never spend so much.

I got a gorgeous Erika 5 as a repair job and the escapement mechanism is brand new to me,  don’t wanna screw up a customer machine.  Any idea how to remedy the issue?  Doesn’t happen consistently.  Just skips one or two spots.  Everything else is fine.  Looks like one of the pieces needs to be adjusted but I’m not sure which one.
