Maintenance & Repairs » 1946 Underwood SS Carriage advance problem? » 17-2-2019 17:10:45

Hi guys, I picked up a 1946 Underwood SS for $30 today and am trying to clean it and get it working to it's former glory. However I have run into an issue that I new about going in, thinking I can fix it, probably gunked up.

Anyways the issue is that the escapement doesn't want to function properly and I don't understand why, the parts seem fine, but when I press keys it's not pressing and disengaging the escapement sprocket properly. Here is a picture of the typewriter for reference.

Hi Again Gryffin

Just saw your pictures in the New Member Thread, this looks like a 1930's unit built in the USA. Next question, is this a carriage shift or basket shift? I have a book that covers basic adjustments on these machines, but be jiggered if I can put my hands on it right now. Cheers,

Sky

It is indeed a Made in United States of America, that is what is on the back.
It is carriage shift, meaning the platen get's moved up and down.
The serial is - CD-218527R

That should help narrow it down. Now I have received some information on this model and it seems that I am being told it uses tabs for stops and that you bend or form them to adjust it. Can you confirm and is there a way you adjust them?

Hi guys, my name is Chris, from San Diego, CA, I've been going analogue for some things, including photography and figured why not also have a typewriter as well. I picked up a Royal Companion for 10 dollars that seemed to have seen better days, but I think I saved this one from being picked apart for jewelry, from what the lady I bought it from was saying, glad I did, this beauty is cleaning up well, I just put in an order for new ink ribbon on amazon for now.

Side note - I'm not using WD40 to clean this thing, I've been watching youtube to make sure I do this right.
