Royal Quiet De Luxe

Picked this up today for $35.  It seems to be working fine but needs a serious cleaning.

Not sure of the date. SN:  A2438496

A 1952 model, one model year before the introduction of the "speed control" feature.

That is a very nice typewriter--does it have the case?

Ohh, speed control!? What's that, Uwe? Mine's a 1950 and the type bunches up something awful unless you type like a metronome - and even then it does it a bit. Does speed control control that?

You don't see many of these machines in the UK.

For three model years ('53-'55), Royal fitted what it called a "Speed Control" to the Quiet De Luxe (possibly other models as well) that essentially was a knob on the left side of the machine's case. Valiant and I examined one not that long ago, and it seemed to be nothing more than an external adjustment for the mainspring tension. I suppose - in theory - that if you type fast enough that you would want more tension on the drawband so that the carriage moves quicker between key strokes. It would be a waste on me with my average typing speed I would think, and we speculated that the feature didn't last long because of the extra cost it would have added to the machine, and perhaps it was creating more problems than it was worth for Royal.

Re: Royal Quiet De Luxe

Thanks for the comments guys. I has a case and it's not in bad shape except for the little rubber feets.
The latch is in good shape.

I'm not done cleaning it yet but I'm quite pleased with the progress. It's coming along fine. The funny story is that the guy I purchased it from purchased a storage unit and the typewriter was the only thing that he found in it that had any value. It has a sticker on the front from an office supply company from the time period. And the business is from my home town.
I'll post some pictures when I'm done cleaning it.

Did my best to clean this one up. Not bad for $35. Considered removing the sticker but I'm afraid it will not go well. At least the office supply company from that time period was located in my home town.

Re: Royal Quiet De Luxe

I like that sticker.  And at least it's pretty straight and centered, and even kind of muted.
