Re: 1949 Smith-Corona Super Speed - Mainspring problem

It works like the day it came out of the factory now!

Mainspring assembly laying on my bed:
Back of typewriter without the mainspring and escapement:

Back from a long break.

Starting fresh with my favorite typer. A Royal Futura!

Re: 1949 Smith-Corona Super Speed - Mainspring problem

By the way, make sure you have ribbon spools in the machine when you are testing it! I'm not sure if the same applies to this machine, but I have a '50s Smith-Corona standard that was having mainspring troubles until I realized the mainspring wouldn't turn one way unless I had spools in the machine! I'm thinking it had something to do with the mainspring powering the ribbon advancement, but I can't be sure.

Re: 1949 Smith-Corona Super Speed - Mainspring problem

it was a common problem on older machines, and there was many a time I have had to take the main spring out of its housing to degrease it, when I was servicing machines back in the 70's and 80's
