I am about to replace the ribbon on my typewriter (allegedly Remington Model 25 ) for the first time. Newbie question. It was suggested to me to buy a generic ribbon and rewind it onto my original metal spools. No worries, I can see how to do that. My question is about the little metal stud that is near the end of the ribbon - see photo. Can I expect that a generic ribbon will have this stud or equivalent in it? Or do I need to buy a certain type of ribbon to make sure it has the stud? Or alternatively, is it essential? Many thanks.

Normal ribbons have the stud in them, and it's not really important unless you have a portable typewriter. So buy what ever ribbons you want.

Some machines require that little grommet in order to trip the ribbon reverse mechanism, but some do not, and some are actually prevented from tripping the reverse mechanism by the grommet fouling in the ribbon guide. Depends on the machine if you require the grommet or not.
If you buy only with, and your machine should not have them, it's easy to cut off that much ribbon and reattach the new end (without) to the spool.

looking at the picture of the ribbon reverse mechanism on that machine, the ribbon does not need a stud in it.
