Tab buttons for 1, 10, 100, 1000. Purpose?

Could someone in a few words describe what the purpose is of some buttons that are on a 5th row, a row above the number keys?  These keys, which I think are for tabbing, are marked 1, 10, 100 and 1000.

I have 2 standard typewriters that have them.  I'd play with them to find out what they're for but both aren't working just yet.

They're for when you have to type out columns of figures - as so many poor office workers, who used these office standards, used to have to do.

Over in the World of Typewriters section of this site is a topic called Film Links and the third video about advanced typing techniques has a brief section about the use of the decimal tabulator keys that you described.

Smith Premier typewriters are cool!
