I have a weakness for Royals, especially those with this keyboard layout (a favorite is the Royal Quiet Deluxe). I bought his one today (and probably overpaid, since it has no case) but love its typeface. Which model is it, and circa when was it made?

Looks like it's the so-called Model O; 1930s-vintage machine.

Fleetwing, I think you nailed it. Would be nice to hear from other owners.

Lovely machine.

Yep, looks like a 1930s 'O', precursor to the Quiet De Luxe models that came along in the 1940s. I have a 1947 QDL and despite its idiosyncrasies, it's definitely a keeper.

What surprises me the most is that the platen is in good shape. Most of my typewriters of this period have hard platens. It has age-related idiosyncrasies but is a pretty good tyoer. I like the typeface better than that of the RQD.

Good Find! Love any of the Royals. Minus the crinkle paint, almost identical to my RQD. Classy machine

It has quirks which may be age-related: the keys seem to pause after striking, and the space bar also hesitates. I have to be careful not too type too fast, since the keys will jam. Does this mean it needs a cleaning?

That's a good place to start.

And I don't care what anybody says, but good ol' tranny fluid lightly brushed in here and there wouldn't hurt.
