Smith Corona Corsair DeLuxe Paper Feed Issue

Hi,

The other day when browsing through a flea market I found a Smith Corona Corsair DeLuxe for a few bucks, and I couldn't resist getting it to give it to my son after fixing the thing up a bit.

After taking the thing apart, cleaning it, putting it back together and replacing the ribbon it rally types pretty nicely. There is one issue though: feeding in a new sheet of paper isn't very easy. There is not a lot of 'grip' on the paper it seems. Is there anything I can do to resolve it, other that changing out rollers or something? Is there an adjustment for the pressure of the rollers against the paper?

Re: Smith Corona Corsair DeLuxe Paper Feed Issue

Hi Schop

On the right side of the carriage, there's what looks like a slide control button, make sure this button is slid all the way forward. Next, check to see that the spring that's connected to the paper trough is still connected to the paper release lever (the bracket which is moved by the slider control). If both these are OK, try cleaning the platen with rubbing alcohol.

If still no joy, you may need to lift the platen out and check the condition of the feed rolls to make sure they are rotating freely and don't have any flat spots. Lastly, you may need to give the platen and feed rolls an application or two of rubber rejuvenator. However, on this late of a machine, I would be very surprised if the platen or feed rolls have hardened yet. Hope this helps point you in the right direction. If I've missed anything, I'm sure that other members will gladly fill in the spaces to get you on your merry way. All the best,

Sky

Hi Sky,

Thanks for the pointers. How do you take the platen out? Is there a maintenance manual for these things online somewhere?

Hi Schop

Yes there is. Go to www.typewriterdatabase.com (you'll have to sign in or create an account to view downloads), then hover over the library tab and a drop menu will appear. Click on repair and a list of downloadable manuals will open. Go to page 2 and look for Service Manual, Smith-Corona 6YC Series Machines - 1973 . Hope this helps and all the best,

Sky
