Hello!
I recently acquired a 1950s-tastic Sterling (Ser. # 5A782367) on the cheap, because the owner described it as having sticky keys. In reality, the typebasket was completely immobilized from oil and dirt and whatnot, and required an afternoon's worth of TLC to get all the keys moving reliably. I succeeded, and now it types very nicely, however the ribbon doesn't appear to be ratcheting properly. When I type, it moves forward and then returns to its original location without ratcheting forward to the next click. The direction lever switches as it should but it doesn't work any better in the opposite direction. I tried cleaning all of the linkages I could see, but it didn't appear to have much affect.
The only other SC portable I have is a Speedline-era Clipper that is too dissimilar underneath to inform me on my current situation. I was wondering if anyone might be able to see what's wrong, if there's any missing/incorrect pieces etc.? The teeth on the gears seem in good shape, and nothing (obvious to me, at least) seems amiss underneath.
I cleaned this bit, which I'm thinking may be the culprit, but I'm not really sure at this point. Is it possible that there's still too much drag elsewhere that is preventing the full range of travel? Manipulating it with my fingers seemed to generate the same amount of travel as it would when pressing a key.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Mat
Nice pictures! Using my SC Clipper (5A-1015722) for reference, looking at your second picture it looks like the metal frame that surrounds the ratchet wheel has been bent too close to the ratchet wheel on the side that doesn't have the screw. On my clipper, there is a good 1/8" clearance between the frame and the wheel. The blue rectangular loop is a ratchet that stops the wheel from going back when the upper ratchet retracts. If you put your thumb or finger on the ratchet wheel and move up, the wheel should ratchet freely but should not turn when moving your finger down. See if this help to figure out the problem. All the best,
Sky

Thanks for the heads-up! As I was watching the metal tab it was getting dragged along by the wheel without stopping it on its return, so I think it needs a bit of straightening out before I reattach it. When I have a moment I'll try and get that straightened out and see if that solves the problem.
I appreciate you taking the time to compare machines.
