Cleaning caked-on dirt from black-colored internal metal parts

I was wondering what people's preferred cleaning solution was for cleaning heavy dirt off of black-colored internal metal parts; not necessarily the joints, but rather the lengths of the keylevers etc, after dusting and dry brushing. I have tried various things, but I have not found anything that works as well as I would like.

Two words:  Tranny Fluid.  This magical stuff will clean without removing the black paint.  I remember once polishing an entire 1984 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Sedan (for some, Saloon), and it ended up looking brandy new.  It also oils and lubricates as you clean.  Remember to wipe off the excess.
