Problem with lettera 32 (knob)

Hello,
I have a problem with my lettera 32.
I disassembled the platten to clean it.
Unfortunately when I handed it I realized that the left knob did not turn perfectly smoothly.
It works but I don'tt know if it did before or if I lost a spring or something else.
The knob rotates and the line space selector is ok.

But it does not turn "round".

Re: Problem with lettera 32 (knob)

Hi there Tony,

One thing that might cause it, is that the platen isn't completely snug into the carriage.
With the Lettera 32, it is possible to assemble the platen and connect both knobs while the platen still has some freedom to move left and right. In proper assembly, the platen should remain still, even if you try to move it left and right. Try and see whether your platen is completely still in the middle, or whether it can move left and right. If the latter is true, you should try to re-assemble the platen, taking care to get it in as snugly as possible.

Another possible cause could be that the mechanic in the left-hand knob is not set properly. If the above doesn't help, you should take the left-hand knob off and take a picture. I'll compare it to one of my Lettera 32's I have here and show you how it should be.

Re: Problem with lettera 32 (knob)

Thank you very much for your help.
Sorry if I have not explained my problem clearly.
I don't think that it comes from the machine.
I put the knob on the platen and I did roll on the table. The knobrotates eccentrically. I think it is the plastic of the knob which does not turn right.  The black part with the button.

Re: Problem with lettera 32 (knob)

OK.
Sounds like the platen knob might be bent out of shape in some way. Perhaps a good idea would be to take it out of the platen again, take a look at whether everything looks alright? See if anything's bent?

Re: Problem with lettera 32 (knob)

Finally I bought another lettera ($ 7) for the part. I took the knob and put it on my first machine. Everything is OK.
You were right. It was the knob who had a problem. When I put it on the one I just bought, there is the same problem.
:-)

I take this opportunity to ask you a question.
Sometimes when I type the letters are not perfectly aligned. I'm not just talking between the lowercase and uppercase but between certain characters. The same character can be printed at different places (a little higher or lower). Apparently this is a common problem on letteras which are not Swiss watch.

Have you ever had the same problem? a solution?

Re: Problem with lettera 32 (knob)

I don't know if they have individual letter adjustment, but on most just VERY CAREFULLY bend the type bar a really small amount left or right. You'll want them to line up with the line near the vibrator.

Back from a long break.

Starting fresh with my favorite typer. A Royal Futura!
