Hi Sky,
thank you, that's a brilliant idea.  I really hadn't thought of asking a jeweller.  I have found someone locally who builds model railway engines though and I'm sure they would be able to dress up that edge or even fabricate a new part if it came down to it.  I'm just waiting for the go ahead to contact them.  I'll post back with progress and pics whatever happens.
