Smith Corona Super Silent - How to Remove the Rear Panel?

Hi all! I am new to the forum and new to typewriters. I picked up a 1954 Smith Corona Super Silent that needs a thorough cleaning. After doing some research, my plan is to remove all of the panels and rubber and then clean what is left with PB Blaster and some natural brushes.

However, I have managed to remove all of the panels except for the one in the rear. This one really has me stumped. The only connection I see remaining are two tiny screws (one on each side) that are hiding under the corners of the panel. The panel corner wraps around them and there is no way that I can see how to access them with normal screwdriver. Attached are some pictures that I thought would help explain. Am I totally missing something here? Hopefully I am just missing something obvious to you all with more experience. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Smith Corona Super Silent - How to Remove the Rear Panel?

Hi Mango

Welcome to the Typewriter Talk Forum. These rear carriage covers can be a little confusing to newcomers, however the trick to getting them off is quite simple. The two little screws you've pointed out do not have heads and are simply locating pins. Take a flat blade screw driver and gently pry the metal of the rear cover off one of the pins and the cover just falls off. Getting the cover back on is a little more tricky as the positioner springs have to be hooked up as the cover is being lifted back into place. Hope this helps and all the best,

Sky

We humans go through many computers in our lives, but in their lives, typewriters go through many of us.
In that way, they’re like violins, like ancestral swords. So I use mine with honor and treat them with respect.
I try to leave them in better condition than I met them. I am not their first user, nor will I be their last.
