Olympia SG1 sounds like metal hitting metal when using shift key

Hi all - I'm not sure if this is normal for the SG1 but when I use the shift key for uppercase letters, etc., it sounds a lot like metal hitting metal (clunk, clunk) when the carriage moves up and down. What gives? Is this normal or is it missing a rubber damper somewhere (if so, where?)? It makes typing really annoying and unnecessarily noisy, which is a bit of a let-down considering all the rave reviews about the SG1 online.

Go here: http://site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/tw-manuals.html and scroll down to the SG-1 service manual. Note there are separate links for text and illustrations (not the most convenient layout; blame Olympia).

Thanks! I never noticed that section on RP's website before...hopefully the manuals will help explain the issue.

Did you ever figure this out?  I noticed the same thing with both of mine.

Unfortunately, not. It's been so annoying that I had to put the typewriter aside and use another one instead...at least, until I can solve the problem.
