My wife went into a pawn shop near work during her lunch break and found an Underwood Portable. The shop owner knew little about the machine other than the person who sold it to him was downsizing all of her belongings. She talked him down to $80 and brought it home.

The next day we took it to get restored at U.S. Office Machine Co. in Los Angeles where they did a full restoration in one week. Below is a link with all the before/after pics:
