This Underwood 18 is becoming a real project. It's a really nice machine that, at first only needed a little bit of TLC. Mostly cleaning. Now that it's clean and mostly functional, I'm getting into the little bits and found that the main spring won't hold tension. Lo and behold, it was cracked.
It is a very small spring, 1 inch in diameter, with 1/4 inch width. I'm looking for one of these intact or another parts machine. This is the only thing holding this little typewriter back from being useful.
Thanks all.

Ignore this, all. I rebuilt the main spring just by cutting a new hole in the end. I had only lost about 2 inches at the very outer end, so this worked out. If this cracks though, I'll be looking for a new spring.
