I shouldn't speak for our host, but he mentioned this and maybe he's busy right now...

He said it was a nightmare moderating posts that could be edited at any time... I guess even years later. I notice you can still reply to very old posts, which is something disabled in many fora (ooh... I'm all edumacated ma.. I used the plural of "forum"  ). Not sure why there just is not a time limit on both functions, so I am supposing board host software does not support it.

Whatever the other reasons are, it's more like typing on a typewriter that way, I think. A bit, anyway.

I got a lovely typewriter today. It was packed in feather pillows, and was all gummed up, probably old WD40. After a while it came to life. I'll get some pictures done and posted tomorrow, now that Nanowrimo is over. I finally got some Pi in the post!

Re: Recent Acquisitions Thread

Types really well, and for £7.99 (£25 inc p&p) I would be chuffed anyway, but this one has some lovely maths characters too. Still a bit mucky underneath, and the seller seems to have helpfully oiled the segment for me, so I'll be washing that out carefully with some meths. It came with some paperwork and original instructions as well which I always find interesting. I have made the touch-typing booklet into a PDF and included it at the end of my blog post about this typewriter today. Click on the link in my signature if you fancy learning to touch type the Imperial Way!

Re: Recent Acquisitions Thread

That's a nice character set - square brackets are not that common, but so useful!

Re: Recent Acquisitions Thread

I found this on Craigslist clear across the country. the seller was asking $50. I inquired and the seller gave me his number.  he must of thought i was local.  I contacted him, explained where I was located and that I wasn't a CS scammer or kook.  he agreed to ship it to me.  "Leap of faith" he said.  he asked for a money order (no Paypal) and I kept my fingers crossed that he'd send it.  he did.  it was in great condition.  I love it.  swoon.    please oh please don't let me start collecting these in the different colors. LOL

It's soooo shiny...

A high schooler with a lot of typewriters. That's pretty much about it.

Re: Recent Acquisitions Thread

An elegant lady arrived today, and not yet having time to adjust her makeup from the journey still allowed me to take this candid shot of the seductive curve of her cover...

She made some extemporaneous remarks, showing that she makes typos like the rest of us. But her even and elegant typos are better than many's perfect copy! Unquenchable elegance coupled with the common touch are the traits of true Royalty. Welcome to my home, Empress.

Re: Recent Acquisitions Thread

Not exactly new, but had been waiting for attention...

Model: Underwood #3, 12" carriage
S/N : 730176-12
Year: 1929
Source: $25 cash and carry, local
Issues as received: carriage frozen, carriage release frozen, paper release frozen, carriage strap missing
First treatment: liberal doses of smog-causing hydrocarbons allowed to evaporate in open air (hey, I don't own a car!)

Current condition:

Carriage: freed
Carriage release: stiff but operational
Paper release: still frozen in released position
Carriage strap: deferred repair
Can the patient communicate? : yes, with assistance

This by applying steady pressure to carriage with one hand while hunting and pecking with other. Family expresses hope at coherent utterance, however slight, since unknown when patient was last able to produce any typescript.

Care provider's notes: Celluloid keys without significant wear suggests short active life before becoming reclusive. Paper rest present in poor condition, removed for photo. Prognosis: carriage strap, easy, frozen paper release, uncertain.
