I was recently given two Selectric 2 machines. The first one had been sitting unused and uncovered for enough years that most of the insides are very sticky. Once I removed the cover I soon realized cleaning it and getting it fully functional is currently way above my pay grade. My neighbor gave me a second one that was not nearly as gummed up but needed a new power switch. The learning curve required breaking the switch before I discovered how to remove the wires. Now it's "working" but like one of my old cars back in the day needs a push start. Every time I want to use it I have to remove the cover and start the motor by hand. Once its going it takes about 15-20 seconds before everything is running. Once I get the cover back on I can type all I want until I switch it off. Then I have to go through the entire procedure again to get it running. Any suggestions to get it to work with just the on/off switch would be greatly appreciated.

The problem could be the motor 'run' capacitor. Do you think you could swop it out with the second machine ?

Hi, can I hijack the thread a bit? I have a question about the capacitor. Is it an easy change? My Selectric has an old, can-style type of capacitor, and I was wondering if I could replace it with a new one when it goes.
