Studio 44 in Underwood 21 case?

So excited -- just scored an Olivetti Studio 44 on another site after being outbid on one last night on SGW. (Which of course could have been one of you. Well played, sir or madam.) I get last laugh though, because this one looks in better shape and was even a little cheaper.

Downside: no case. Only being shipped from a state away though, so I am hopeful it arrives intact.

But it raises a question: I already have a Barcelona Underwood 21. Will the Studio 44 fit in its case? In the unlikely event I wish to transport it in any serious way. I know their guts are identical, but what about the form factor? I doubt it, but it would be cool if so. I will know soon enough of course...

Hi Lazydog,

I would venture a guess that both cases are inter-changeable.

Here is a photo of an O-U 21 case I own and a photo off the Intenet of a Studio 44 case.

I ended up with a spare O-U 21 case...but it now houses my 1964 Torpedo 18s.

yup, I thought so -- they are both so boxy so probably totally interchangeable. Thanks!

Re: Studio 44 in Underwood 21 case?

I have been thinking the body-works might be interchangeable as well.

One day when I find a Studio 44 for obscenely cheap, I might spring for it to test out my theory.

Re: Studio 44 in Underwood 21 case?

I just love the Studio 44 and am so excited to get my hands on one. Looks like a deep sea creature to me. Of course what I really hope is that the action is lighter than the Underwood 21, because I don't know if that's just a feature of the larger machine or some flaw in my cleaning diligence -- soon I'll know!

Re: Studio 44 in Underwood 21 case?

I think the Studio 44 is just as deep as the O-U 21.

My 21 weighs in at 15.8 lbs. without its case.  Let us know what the Studio 44 weighs when you have it.

I use a digital bathroom scale to weigh my machines.

And don’t know if the bodies are interchangeable but the mainsprings sure are…because I cannibalized the mainspring from the 21 so that the 44 could live. And live it does!

Funny...I would cannibalize a 44 to save my 21.

LOL -- I think I prefer Jacques-Cousteau-nightmare-fuel typewriter on my desk to break-the-sound-barrier-matchbox-car typewriter. Though I love them both -- and my seven year-old is pissed, because he loved the matchbox car one.
