What is this? (1950s Smith Corona 88)

Hi everyone,
Our 9-year old son recently bought an old typewriter at a yard sale and has gotten really interested in getting it cleaned up and working well.  I’ve been helping him a bit, and we figured out it’s a Smith-Corona 88 Secretarial from the mid-1950s.

One piece has us stumped, though - hanging out of the right side behind the carriage is a thin strap/flat string with a metal bracket on the end.  Picture here: https://i.ibb.co/J5xx3fr/94467-E0-A-0398-46-A0-BE32-17-FCE564-CB5-C.jpg

Forgive our ignorance, but - what is this? Can’t find mention in the original manual or anything similar in typewriter restoration videos etc.

Thanks very much for any help!

It is the carriage draw-band and uses the force of the main-spring to move the carriage along when typing.  Yours has come un-attached from the bottom, right side of the carriage and will need tension applied to the main-spring and then the draw-band attached, again.

Try looking up YouTube videos by Phoenix Typewriters for Smith Corona machines.

Pete E., thank you very much! And I appreciate you taking the time to find videos, too.  This kind of thing is what’s great about the internet…
