Seidel & Naumann Erika 5 elite pitch?

Hello, I recently acquired an Erika 5 and it has quickly become my favorite machine.  ...about the only thing I can complain about is the pica pitch.  I saw mention of an elite typeface called perlschrift on TWDB, but haven't identified any for sale yet.  Why does it appear (to me at least) there so many more pica machines than elite?  Is it a modern sensibility to prefer the smaller type?  Just curious.  Maybe it's exposure to small text on screens/smart phones that makes pica look silly and unserious to me.

Also does anyone have advice on keeping the decals preserved?  I have some automotive cleaning polish, and "Gold Class Carnuba Plus Premium paste wax".  But I'm leery of putting anything on the body because the decals are already in such great shape.

Cybill, of 250 typewriters that I have laid hands on 79% are pica and 21% are elite. Perhaps there is a manageable way to get those figures from the Typewriter Database, a 100 times larger sample..... Ted?.... I agree with your preference, though I wouldn't say pica looks unserious but that elite looks more elegant. That's just personal opinion, though.

As for why pica is so much more common, that will remain in the realm of opinion pending a lot more research. "Students wanted to fill up a page faster. Businesses wanted to maximize use of paper. Academics wanted ? Government wanted ? Newspapers wanted what, clarity?" Etc. And which markets were bigger?

Decal preservation? When the whole machine is clean, put a wax over everything. But be aware that "polish" is by definition abrasive, however slightly. And "cleaning" might work chemically as well as abrasively. Test, perhaps on some other less precious appliance of similar age. A pure wax should be safe enough. All that said, though, I have not had any trouble with the commonly available waxes and the results are great. Sometimes I see the paint tinting the polishing cloth and back off on the pressure; using a different wax would be better. If your paint or decals are flaking already, stabilize that before rubbing.

Re: Seidel & Naumann Erika 5 elite pitch?

As a general rule of thumb - and it is only a rule of thumb - Pica was more popular before the Second World War, and Elite after.  Yes there were Elite typewriters in the 1920's, and Pica machines were made right up until production of manual typewriters ceased.  So it depends on which era's typewriters you are interested in.  If you have mainly pre-war machines in your collection for instance, then the likelihood is that the vast majority will have a Pica typeface.
