Carriage slides freely

I have a Remington Portable 2, which appears in overall good shape, but has a problem with the carriage/escapement. With carriage unlocked, it slides freely and spring pulls it left to the stop. With a letter or space bar depressed, it locks left but can be pushed right, clicking as it goes. Underneath, I see an escapement mechanism that tilts up when a key is pressed and engages the toothed bar. This is, I think, as it should be, but when the mechanism tilts down again, there should be something that catches the bar after it has advanced one space. I don't see anything obvously broken or missing. Where is the corresponding part of the escapement that would catch the toother bar after it has advanced one space? Thanks for any help.

Re: Carriage slides freely

Urh. Sorry to hear this. I have this problem with one of my remington portable 2s as well. Except worse, because it won't catch unless I force the thing to engage with a rubber band pulled really tight from the back right hand corner of the carriage and looped over the platen knob. It is the only way I could see to solve it. And my temporary solution makes it a half-typer, only going halfway along before the rubber band stops it. So this might help you actually type half a line, but it won't completely solve the issue. It's a real pain, because it is such a gorgeous machine, and has a light snappy touch.

I know I am going to have to take it to be seen to by a repair person one day if I ever want to type more than short lines of poetry or shopping lists on it!
