The Royal 440 Beast

A friend's mother dropped off a late 60's Royal 440 while I was out and about (since I am an adolescent and such). So I came home to quite a surprise. This typewriter is huge. It dwarfs any other machine I own. And I barely know how to use it. Mostly the Magic Margin feature. I have two other Royals, but one is a stripped down ultra-portable and the other is before they even had Magic Margin. I know the Magic Margin is the signature of Royal, but it's new to me. Also, It is completely seized up. I went to go type, and none of the keys would move. I thought the carriage lock was on. But, it was not. So any tips on how to get it working again, would be greatly valued.

Re: The Royal 440 Beast

Ok, update on the Magic Margin issue. I have figured out to SET the margins, but not RESET them. And this machine is so freaking big, that turning it around and manually setting them is a real pain. But I still need help getting the keys working again...

Re: The Royal 440 Beast

To reset the margins just set them at the extreme end of their respective sides

Re: The Royal 440 Beast

Oh, and liquid wrench penatrating oil works wonders on frozen segments. Is the carriage working ok?

The carriage is fine. Even the tab works. But I think I got it typing again. With alcohol. But I would like to know more about this machine because I can't find ANYTHING about the Royal 440.

Re: The Royal 440 Beast

There isn't a whole lot out there on em, unfortunately. I think it succeded the FP model but is mechanically very similar. It is one of the last Royal manual standards.

Actually, it was the Empress and Electress models that followed the FP, which were perhaps the most exotic of the Royal standards in terms of the design of their case.

Wow, the Empress is a huge leap from the FP in terms of design

Re: The Royal 440 Beast

I think the 440 is basically the Empress in a new body. That helps a bit. But The FP is indeed a pretty big leap to the Empress. Is there a transition model that we don't know about?

Re: The Royal 440 Beast

I dunno, but now I really want a 440 (and an Empress). What color is yours, anyway?
