Tippa S

Hello, I'm new here. Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

I'm new to typewriters and collecting.  My first is an Olympia SG3 from an estate sale.  It is in amazing condition and looks to be a Spanish keyboard, which is cool.

So since I'm in love, I jumped in with both feet.  I've gotten a few typewriters from Goodwill that need a little love. One, cause they are cheaper, and two so I can learn.  One of these babies is an Adler Tippa S.  I love the sleek look and that its a portable, but it has some problem and I'm not sure if it is worth the time or $ to fix.

The carriage skips and sticks
The platten is shot
They keyboard keys don't sit even and consistent.

It is such a small machine, I can't figure out how to get in there and tinker around. It is also a later model, from the '70s I'm guessing.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks!!!

Re: Tippa S

I moved this topic to the Repair section.

I don't have a Tippa S, but I'm a big fan of the previous Tippa generations, so my short answer would be YES, it is worth taking the time to fix your ultra-portable.

The carriage skips and sticks

Sounds like the escapement needs a good cleaning - for a start. You'll need to remove the body from the machine to properly get at it, and while everything is open you can not only clean the entire machine, but you'll also be in a better position to assess what's going on with the typewriter.

The platten is shot

Are you sure? What made you reach this conclusion? It's fairly rare to have a 'shot' platen, more so with such a relatively new machine.

They keyboard keys don't sit even and consistent.

Can you elaborate on this? And photos always help. Is it one or two keys, many, are they higher or lower than the others? Do all the type slugs rest properly in the slug bed?

Re: Tippa S

I'll get some pictures up soon.  You're right the platten is still good. I'm working on a few other machines so I get them all confused.

I have the machine out of the case, but can't figure out how to get at anything further.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Tippa S

Alright here are some pictures.  I didn't want to post video, so I took pictures of what I could.

J key sticks with 8: http://imgur.com/BKUvAum
Escapement intact: http://imgur.com/gUFDyx7
Keys: http://imgur.com/aXGRbZJ
Keys:  http://imgur.com/xfElqIp

1. carriage skips with space
2. carriage doesn't always advance with keystroke
3. spacing makes the hammer "jump"
4. pressing j makes the j and 8 try to strike, but can't.
5. + hammer falls off the pad after strike
6. pressing * makes multiple keys "jump"
7. keys don't sit evenly

Re: Tippa S

"J key sticks with 8"

The photo is blurry, so it's hard to tell, but it looks like the '8' slug is twisted and hooks on the 'J' slug. The cure for this is to straighten the slug(s).

"Escapement intact"

That's not the escapement, but the drawband drum. The escapement is in the middle of the machine directly underneath the carriage. Spacing and skipping issues would lead me to thoroughly clean the escapement as a start.

"Keys"

Uneven keys at repose could be bent key bars, bent linkages, or even broken keys (look underneath them to see if the plastic is broken and the key is sitting lower on the key bar than the others).

I don't know what you mean by "hammer" in points 3 and 5.
