Wonky Hermes 3000 shift key
Recently got a Hermes 3000 and am really loving it. The right shift key has a lot of left-to-right movement, though. I'm wondering if this is normal or not. Anyone?

Which generation of the 3000 did you buy?
The pronoun I has always been capitalized in the English language for more than 700 years.

Oh, sorry. It's a 1953, based on the serial number and typewriter database.

Soooo jealous. I was beaten to one of those on eBay last week. It seems to be hard to get a Hermes in the UK. You don't see many, and they tend to be pricy.

I just checked two of that generation 3000, and each of their right shift key levers exhibited the same amount of play, around 3 or 4mm of lateral movement, certainly not what I would describe as being excessive.

Okay, 3-4mm is about what the shift key is moving on mine, so that's good news. Thanks for checking that out for me!
I'm going to experiment here by trying to post an animated gif of the key in motion.

Woah. That's certainly far more movement than normal! Mine moves about the same as Uwe's: just like the one on the left of your machine.
Might be worth poppping the base off and comparing the two - there could be a guide missing on the right.
Great machines - aren't they! Well worth looking after.

That's a lot more than 4 mm of movement! And it definitely is not normal. As beak suggested, there might be something missing or not properly in place. I'll warn you though, the 3000 is a horrible machine to work on in terms of just removing its case (body) so if it isn't something you can access the way it is, you might want to live with the play in that key.
