Realizing that I didn't know a thing about a number of highly popular and influential contemporary artists, I've been listening to Drake over the past two days. Rap is not a genre that I ever listen to, but I have to admit that Drake is more approachable than most and he has his moments, so I can understand why someone into that sort of thing would like his music. What I don't get is why every single song repeatedly drops the 'N' bomb; it comes across as being very contrived, even compensating for something. Are rap artists not taken seriously if they don't adhere to a limited vocabulary that revolves around the 'N' word?

Just found Classics Online. To see how big their range of CD-quality stuff was, I seached for Mahler 6.
There were 28 performances available!
My free triel period may be occupied by listening to them all.
From Educating Rita:
Rita; 'Wouldn't you just die without Mahler!"
Frank; 'Frankly, no.'

Uwe,
1) Yes
2) I first read your post to mention highly popular and "ineffectual" contemporary artists
The unconscious knows best.
Regarding 1), check out "MC Hammer" for one to see this wasn't always so. I'm sure he is regarded as quaint - and worse - by those on contemporary scene. As for psycho/sociological explanation, I could speculate, but not only would it violate your no political discussion rule, but cultural taboos. So I remain silent.

Very rhythmic metal with nice grungy-sounding vocals on some of the verses.

If audio dramas count, I'm listening to the recent Big Finish Productions release of B7 Media's The Martian Chronicles, an all-star radio play based on Ray Bradbury's book of the same name. I trust I'm not the only Derek Jacobi fan here?

I listen to pretty much anything, from whatever's on the local classic oldies station, to various soundtracks from video games that I like. And some Glenn Miller in there too.
