Large type smith-corona?

I think I've just won a large type smith corona in ebay.  I guess I will find out for sure soon, but tell me if you think I am right. The typewriter itself is not much of a looker, but I'm excited to see the typeface.

Here is the listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Smith-Corona-Classic-12-manual-portable-typewriter-w-hard-case-/201343493300?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=Uev2Yh%252FSo3i2B0gZdFo7%252BIKqwxA%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

I also asked the seller if she could provide a type sample, even if the ribbon was very dry.  Here is what she sent me:

Re: Large type smith-corona?

Yes, it has a larger than average typeface, which is easily confirmed by looking at the scale on the paper table, which for the Classic 12 goes to '110' for machines fitted with pica type, and '130' for those with elite.

I think it's the other way around, Uwe, since elite is smaller (12 cpi) you'll get a higher character count with it than with pica (10 cpi).

Of course, it was a momentary brain fart on my part. I sometimes type things too quickly... (I'll correct my post now).

Re: Large type smith-corona?

I was wondering about that too.  I get them confused anyway, since in my mind pica should be smaller, like pico in the unit prefix sense.  (Milligram, nanogram, picogram , etc...)

As for the scale, I thought it went up to 60-65, but it was a bit blurry so I was t sure,  I don't think the seller realized it was an unusual/less common typeface.

Cool.  Where is yours coming from?  We will have to compare.

Re: Large type smith-corona?

Mine has travelled from Denver CO to the UK, currently "somewhere" with the man in a van. The many stops it has had makes my stomach wobble. Expecting it today, tomorrow, soon!

Re: Large type smith-corona?

I think mine is expected Friday.  I suspect it is going to require extensive cleaning.

Re: Large type smith-corona?

Malole, you bought a typerwriter from the US to the UK? Brave!! I'll be very interested to hear all abour that. Pictures please!

And kudos too for the pretty penny you must have spent on the shipping. That has put me off in every case so far, no matter how tempted...
