Re: New Member Thread

Another newbie here! I've been collecting for about a year and am a great lover of the cursive typeface.  My favorite years are the 50's and who doesn't love a typewriter with color? I'm glad I found this board and look forward to participating as well as learning.

Re: New Member Thread

Hi all, I've caught the typewriter fever ever since I had discovered how wonderful and complex mechanical linkages  are on my work placement. However, I've ran into some repair issues and would rather learn do it myself rather than having to rely on the local repairman here in Melbourne.

Btw, I've got a Royal KMM, two De Luxe, Royale 425, 2 variants of Imperial Good Companion 1, Olivetti 32, Torpedo 15, Olympia SM2 and an Underwood Universal.

Re: New Member Thread

Just counted it up, and I actually only have 17. Can I get that number down to 15? Probably not with Torpedo 18 I have my eye on...

A high schooler with a lot of typewriters. That's pretty much about it.

Re: New Member Thread

I guess I should have taken the hint and started here.

My real name is Ed and I live in Brooklyn, NY. I don't think I have *ever* used an avatar before, and I admit I was shamelessly derivative of "persiflage" 's much better choice, so I had to settle for idle repartee.

I can't say what hatched the idea "I think I would like a typewriter again", but I see from the records that the Royal 10 I have been messing around with have just passed our one month anniversary, and I must say I am very happy in the relationship, and especially since she does not seem jealous that I immediately went about collecting a seraglio. I hardly touch them, honey!

It's easy to pick up portables, I see, and some have a great touch, but I think my heart belongs to the heavies - I was lucky in that the two seriously vintage office machines I bought responded to the most minor cleaning and lubrication, and new ribbons, and came back to life, which is immensely satisfying to a dilettante. I will give up the attempt of seriously tearing apart a machine before I start. It could just be a passing fad, but I feel like I have picked up a musical instrument that I had abandoned years before, and will not put down again. Indeed a manual typewriter is an instrument, powered by and guided by human muscles to put ink on paper the way a trumpet is guided by human muscles to produce music. And I find every time I type a page and go back to the plastic computer keyboard which never bothered me before, there is a SERIOUS cognitive dissonance! Now that I think of it that way, we have not given up acoustic instruments just because electronic one were invented, and perhaps more people will come to their senses and feel the same way about fine mechanical writing instruments. Meanwhile, I shall hoard them. ;)
