Yes - look at picture 9; I think the scale gives away the fact that this is normal size type.

yeah, I was curious about the "large" part too.    this isn't the 6 cpi I was talking about but the "large" description caught my eye.

Re: Your Ebay watch list

yeah, I thought this was the auction but the listing I saw was actually on a CL ad from up north.

I've got a 6 cpi Smith Corona Classic 12 I'm thinking of selling. It's not the prettiest thing I've ever seen.

LOL. isn't that funny about the Classic 12s? some have the best cursive or larger typefaces but I struggle with the shape.

This machine looks like the last machines I put in their cases never to use again - I can remember using one like it because I HAD to use a typewriter, which puts a different complexion on things. Big difference between doing as much as you like and as much as you have to - in particular if you HAD to produce error-free documents without all those delightful typos and spelling errors which are so amusing when nobody forces you to fix them! I would be putting these away and embracing modern technology that day, I tell you.

I don't like the looks of them much either but I took it just to be personal association. I'm interested to learn people who may not have this association also find them unappealing. Double whammy.

Still, someone bought it...

By the way, have you noticed some changes in ebay listings lately? I am almost every day following new listings, and currently most of the new listings are very common or even electronic typewriters, and many have very high starting price tag (in ebay.de, uk, and com). I wonder if it is just Christmas time, or good (inexpensive) machines are becoming much harder to find because the supplies are dwindling?

Old Typewriter Hands accurately predicted this holiday price surge. If you go to Advanced Search and look at completed listings, you will be reassured to find that common machines with inflated prices have not been selling, holidays or not. There will be a market correction.

Re: Your Ebay watch list

Some time ago I posted this photo...

And the question was raised, is it a Hammond Vari-typer?

I've since seen a second listing for a Hammond Vari-typer looking much more like a beefed up standard office machine in grey crinkle paint. The core of the mechanism was clearly identical, though: three-bank keyboard, spool holder design, central cylindrical nest of springs with a semi-cylindrical typing plate visible, same gauge in the same place with same face. So I guess this one must be a Vari-typer with an extra-extra-wide carriage. Could it be missing the body?

However, this is all stuff and nonsense. Any rational person can see that this is really the fossilized head of a giant late Carboniferous dragonfly.

Re: Your Ebay watch list

A few items of interest on the US eBay site now:

Demountable #1

Large Font SG-3

The Demountable looks like a Royal 10 clone with an added feature: the carriage is demountable and takes the entire shell of the machine with it!  Easy to clean and service.

The font of the Olympia is described as "fairly large" and if you look at the scale in magnification you see it only has about 75 increments for what looks like at least an 11" platen. 7 cpi?

I'd love to own the SG-3 and the price is reasonable but I would have to deacquisition considerably before considering such a curiosity. Ditto the Demountable - no idea if that price is "reasonable" and might be considering the apparent rarity, but not a bargain. The decal on the back shows a happy user demounting it.

Nice find!  I have been searching for one of those Olympias.  Would like to find one in a little nicer condition, but, at least it works.  I wonder if they will relist it.  Looks like it just ended.
