Hi everyone,
I have inherited a Smith Corona XL 1000 from my late Grandma that was her and my mom's typewriter for a long time. Every time I visited, I would use it and it has always worked for me with only minor issues I was only told about, but had not noticed myself. Since my grandparents passing and selling of their house, I asked to have the typewriter and it was shipped across the country. Since its arrival it has been sitting a while and now that I have gone to use it, it will not type.
The issue:
- When I turn it on it goes to reset the cartridge, carries the cartridge to the left, pauses and then readjusts the cartridge and then pauses and readjusts and repeats.
- This repeats until I turn the machine off or open the lid
- The input from the keyboard doesn't seem to change anything- no matter what keys I push nothing changes.
- If the lid is open it will adjust itself but not carry itself back to the left and will stay in place until the lid is closed and then the adjusting, pausing, repeating begins
- I cannot tell if the keyboard has power/connection - At the start of my troubleshooting, if I pressed the 'Lock' button the light would flicker on or stay on depending on where on the key I pushed. This has since stopped and now the light does not come on anymore.
- I have tried changing the cartridge and taking out the correcting tape and reinstalling it but that has not made any changes.
- I cleaned out the dust as best as I could
- The machine doesn't make any buzzing noises when plugged in but not on, and has a slight buzzing noise coming from the cartridge component (or this area) when on, but it does not seem distressing or out of place to the machines general functions.
I am new to the world of fixing/repairing typewriters and I am nervous to explore further without some direction or guidance as it seems that maybe it has something to do with the keyboard/circuitry. If you have seen this before or have some advice as to what I can try next, please help! This typewriter has a lot of sentimental value to me and I hope to have it functioning so I can carry on typing!
Thank you!

Hi there,
I wish I had some helpful info on how to repair these later model electrics (80s). Because their market value is low and there is less interest in these later models it may be difficult to repair, what with circuit boards etc. It could be replaced with another unit for 40 or 50 bucks but I'm sure it has sentimental value to you. You might do a google search for a pdf manual for the machine to see if it provides any clues to its operation and troubleshooting. Good luck.
